#PREPARATION OF 4-BENZYLIDENE-2-PHENYL OXAZOLE-5-ONE#


Aim: To prepare and submit the pure product of 4-Benzylidine-2-Phenyl oxazole-5-one
Apparatus: Round bottomed flask, Condenser, Water bath, Beaker, Funnel, Glass rod
Chemicals: Benzaldehyde, Benzyl glycine, Sodium hydroxide, Acetic acid, Ethanol.

Principle: Principle involved in the preparation of 4-Benzylidine-2-Phenyl oxazole-5-one is dehydration followed by cyclization method. The active methylene group react with aromatic aldehydes, Benzyl glycine reacts with benzaldehyde followed by dehydration gives 4-Benzylidine-2-Phenyl oxazole-5-one.

Mechanism:
Procedure: Take 3.25ml of  Benzaldehyde 5.5g of Benzyl glycine 19.5g NaOH, 2.5ml of Acetic acid in 100ml round bottom flask. Heat the reaction mixture in hot plate with a occasional stirring until the solid mixture convert to liquid.


 Remove the flask & heat the mixture by using reflux condenser& add 12.2ml of  Ethanol carefully & left the reaction mixture over a while. Separate the crystals of 4-Benzylidine-2-Phenyl oxazole-5-one wash the mixture with ice cold water & again wash and dry the sample and calculate it.
Calculation:
 Molecular weight of Benzaldehyde = 106.12gm
106.12gm of benzaldehyde gives                  249.2gm of 4-Benzylidine-2-Phenyl oxazole-5-one
3.38g of benzaldehyde         X g of 4-Benzylidine-2-Phenyl oxazole-5-one X=3.38*249.23/106.12=7.93gm
Theoretical yield =7.93g
Practical yield=----------------- g
Percentage yield = practical yield/ theoretical yieldx100=------------------------------%w/w
Report:
4-Benzylidine-2-Phenyl oxazole-5-one is prepared & submitted.
